Torn Paper....Arghhh!

When I saw that the Butterfly Challenge  #30 was Butterfly/ies + J  is for Jagged edges (ie. torn papers, distressed edges using a distressing tool/scissors) my initial reaction was to wait and see what the theme was going to be next fortnight!  However, not wanting to be beaten by a challenge theme, I went out of my comfort zone and tore some patterned paper.  You cannot believe how difficult it was for me not to get out the scissors or guillotine and straighten the torn edges!!
I looked for some vintage style paper, as I thought it might look better with the torn edges.  The paper I used is from a freebie paper pad that came with a magazine some time ago.  I put a piece of honey coloured card in the gap, which picked out the colour of some of the butterflies in the patterned paper.  The sentiment was stamped on the same plain card, which I die-cut..... Sorry Mrs A., I just couldn't bring myself to tear around the sentiment too!  I had a snippet of the patterned paper left over, so I used this to punch out three butterflies, attaching them to the card by just the bodies to make the wings stand out.  So, just a simple card today, despite it taking so long to decide how to make it.  I'm still not sure about it, but as the Butterfly Challenge closes tomorrow, this will be my entry.

I would like to enter my card into the following challenges:

  6. Sometimes I love it when I'm really challenged by a challenge, because of the really creative thinking it pushes me into. I can see the same has worked for you here and the resulting card is gorgeous. Punching the butterflies was an inspired finishing touch!

  11. Beautiful card, and I love those torn edges! Grinned as I read that, because I have the same problem. In a class, the teacher couldn't believe that someone could NOT just tear paper. Mine always looks wonky & messy. Very much like the way you've got the under layer revealed for your trio of butterflies to rest upon. Also I enjoyed the crispness of your die cut combined with the rougher texture of your torn edges. Great design detail. Well done! TFS & Hugs

  15. Hi Liz,
    oh this is great.
Love that fab design, and the cute little butterflies in the center.
Wonderful paper, and you have just reminded me I have that some where in my craft room.

  16. This is very pretty Liz and I love the idea of tearing the backing paper to leave the gap in the middle and then filling it with those lovely butterflies. I keep meaning to enter this challenge but for one reason or another I find it is over before I have hardly thought about it. x

  17. I had to laugh because I never wanted to tear beautiful paper either. It seemed so wrong! You did a fantastic job and the color you picked in the center really shows off the butterflies. Sometimes you just have to take a big breath and do it. My torn edges never looked as good as yours do.

  18. I think you did a marvelous job with the tearing and this design, Liz! You either weren't around or you ignored the days when tearing paper was all the rage. It happened not too long after I started this hobby and everyone was doing it, to the point where we all grew to quite like it. I still like it now and then, such as now! Enjoy your day! 1. I actually like torn paper on other people's cards, but I never like the look on my own. I think that my Mum, who was a crafter, was a perfectionist so I grew up thinking all craft work has to be neat and tidy. LOL! xx

  19. Way to step out of your comfort zone. I like how created a stripe for the butterflies with your torn paper. And I really like how you used the same paper to make the butterflies. Very pretty.
